Campaign for a local Post Office

by Tom Simon on 22 February, 2009

Campaigning for a new Post Office for BelsizeThe campaign to stop the Post Office closures has seen many battles and the most recent round saw the closure of the Englands Lane Post Office.

Tom, along with hundreds of local residents, supported the petition that local campaigners took to Downing Street.

The Labour Government’s decision to close Englands Lane follows the withdrawal of the previous commitment to re-open the Post Office on Haverstock Hill.

Local campaigners have been working hard to find alternative options and this might include setting up a community trust to run a Post Office locally.  As well as hitting local residents, the closure has also created difficulty for traders and businesses – especially people who work from home.  The next nearest now are Hampstead High Street, Finchley Road and Queen’s Crescent and more and more people are complaining about the length of queues at these locations.

Our Labour MP said she was against the closure plans and yet failed to vote in the House of Commons when the issue was debated and forced to a vote.  A number of Labour MPs voted, a Junior Minister resigned and failed to vote in the division.
